Combining Botox and skin boosters: sequencing and spacing

Many clients ask whether they can have Botox and a skin booster like Profhilo in the same treatment plan. The answer is yes, and the two treatments work beautifully together because they target different problems using entirely different mechanisms. This post explains why, how to sequence them safely, and what a realistic 12-month plan looks like.

The short version

  • · Botox relaxes muscles; skin boosters hydrate and stimulate collagen. Different jobs, same face.
  • · You can have both in one appointment (30 minutes to an hour) or space them two weeks apart if you prefer.
  • · Botox takes 5-14 days to work fully; Profhilo takes around 4 weeks, with best results after a second session.
  • · A combined 12-month plan typically involves 2-3 Botox treatments and 2-3 Profhilo courses, spaced to avoid overwhelming the skin.

Why Botox and skin boosters complement each other

Botox and Profhilo do fundamentally different things, which is precisely why they pair so well. Botox works by blocking the signal between nerve and muscle, relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (the lines that appear when you move your face). It takes effect within 5-14 days and lasts around 3-6 months as the body naturally metabolises the product.

Skin boosters, by contrast, inject hyaluronic acid directly into the dermal layer of the skin, where it attracts moisture and stimulates your own fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin. This improves skin texture, firmness, and radiance without adding volume or changing your face shape. Profhilo improvements are noticeable after 4 weeks, with optimal results after a second session spaced about four weeks later.

In my clinic, I describe this as treating the "structure" (wrinkles and movement, via Botox) and the "canvas" (skin quality and glow, via Profhilo). A client with fine lines around the eyes and dull, dehydrated skin benefits far more from both treatments than chasing either one alone. The result is a face that looks fresher, smoother, and more radiant, not frozen or overdone.

Can you have both in one appointment?

Yes. You can safely receive Botox and Profhilo in the same session, and this is one of the most popular combinations I offer. The appointment typically takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on whether you choose topical numbing for the skin booster (which adds comfort and a few minutes to the time).

The key is order and technique. I generally administer Botox first, because the anti-wrinkle injections are targeted to specific muscles and require precision; there is no benefit to numbing or pre-treating the skin for Botox. Once that is done, I then move to the skin booster, which is a series of small intradermal injections across the face (or specific areas like the cheeks and jawline). If you want numbing cream, I apply it after Botox while you settle.

I should note that some clients prefer to space the treatments across two visits, usually two weeks apart. This allows any minor swelling from the Profhilo to settle before assessing the Botox result, and some people simply feel more relaxed having one treatment per appointment. Both approaches are safe; it comes down to your comfort and schedule.

Spacing: same session vs two visits

If you decide to space the treatments across two visits, I recommend a two-week interval. This allows the Profhilo to settle and any initial swelling to subside before you begin to see and assess your Botox results. Two weeks is also long enough that any mild bruising from either treatment is usually resolved.

That said, if you come in for a same-session appointment, there is no safety concern with receiving both on the same day. Your skin may be slightly more reactive for a few hours, and you might see minor redness or puffiness, but this is entirely normal and settles within 24 hours with basic aftercare (avoiding heavy exercise, extreme heat, and manual massage of the treated areas).

In practice, I find that clients who are new to either treatment benefit from spacing, because it lets them observe the individual effect of each. Clients who are already familiar with Botox and are adding a skin booster often prefer the single appointment for convenience.

A realistic 12-month treatment plan

Let me walk through what a sensible 12-month plan might look like. This is not a prescription, but a pattern I see work well for clients who want a combined approach without over-treating.

  • · Month 1 (Week 1): Initial Botox and Profhilo in the same session. You'll look and feel normal within 24 hours.
  • · Month 1 (Week 4): Second Profhilo session (the course is two sessions four weeks apart for best initial results).
  • · Month 4: Botox top-up. At this point, your initial Botox will have started to wear off slightly, and a gentle refresh maintains the effect without over-correcting.
  • · Month 6: Profhilo maintenance. A single maintenance session every three months keeps the skin hydrated and collagen-stimulated.
  • · Month 9: Botox top-up (repeating the pattern from month 4).
  • · Month 12: Optional Profhilo maintenance, or schedule for month 15 if you find the effect is still holding well.

This plan spreads treatments across the year and avoids the trap of chasing one product obsessively. Many clients feel pressure to get Botox every 12 weeks like clockwork, or to book Profhilo every four weeks to "maintain results". In truth, a slightly longer interval between appointments often feels better and looks more natural. The skin has time to settle, and you avoid the hypersensitivity that can come from too-frequent injection.

What to expect: timeline and results

Expectation-setting matters. Botox and Profhilo work on different timelines, and conflating them causes disappointment.

Botox results: Within the first few days, you may notice your habitual frown or forehead movement feels softer. Real smoothing of the lines becomes clearer over one to two weeks as the full effect develops. By week three, the result is stable and lasts until around month 3 to 4, when muscle movement gradually returns.

Profhilo results: You may feel your skin is more hydrated and plump immediately after the second session (around week 4-8), but the most noticeable improvements in texture, firmness, and glow develop over 8-12 weeks as collagen builds. This is why the second session is so important; the first primes your skin, and the second amplifies the effect. Results last around 3-6 months, after which gradual fading occurs as the hyaluronic acid is naturally metabolised by your body.

A short safety note

Combining Botox and Profhilo is safe when administered by a trained practitioner using aseptic technique and appropriate volumes. Both products are metabolised naturally by the body; neither is permanent, and both are reversible. (Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed, though this is rarely necessary with Profhilo because it is not a volume filler.)

The most common side effects are minor: mild bruising, temporary puffiness, or tenderness at injection sites. These resolve within 24-48 hours with simple aftercare. Serious complications are rare when treatments are delivered by an experienced, regulated practitioner. At Visage Aesthetics, all treatments are delivered by myself or nursing staff trained to my standard, and I maintain detailed records of all products, doses, and placement.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or botulinum toxin, these treatments are not suitable. If you have active skin infection, severe bleeding disorders, or are taking medications that thin the blood significantly, discuss this at consultation before booking.

Why this beats chasing one product

I see many clients who have spent a year or two with only Botox, or only Profhilo, and felt disappointed. The reason is simple: they were asking one product to solve two problems. A client with wrinkles and poor skin quality who receives only Botox gets smoother movement lines but still looks tired because the skin itself is dull and dehydrated. Conversely, someone who receives only Profhilo gets a glow and firmer texture, but dynamic wrinkles remain visible.

The combined approach is holistic. It addresses muscle, dermis, and epidermis simultaneously. The result is a face that looks naturally refreshed, not "done", because you're not over-correcting any single dimension. This is the approach I favour in my own practice and with clients I see regularly.

Common questions

Can you have Botox and skin boosters at the same time?

Yes, you can safely receive Botox and Profhilo in the same appointment, which typically takes 30 minutes to an hour. Botox is administered first for precision, followed by the skin booster injection. Some clients prefer to space them two weeks apart, which is also safe and allows time for any initial swelling to settle.

How long does it take to see results from Botox and skin boosters?

Botox takes 5-14 days to work fully, whilst Profhilo improvements are noticeable after around 4 weeks, with optimal results after a second session spaced about four weeks later. This means you'll see the Botox effect first, followed by the skin quality improvements from the booster.

How do Botox and skin boosters work differently?

Botox relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles by blocking nerve signals, whilst skin boosters like Profhilo inject hyaluronic acid into the skin to attract moisture and stimulate collagen and elastin production. Together they address both wrinkles and skin texture without changing your face shape.

How often do you need Botox and skin booster treatments?

A typical 12-month combined plan involves 2-3 Botox treatments and 2-3 Profhilo courses, spaced to avoid overwhelming the skin. Botox lasts around 3-6 months, whilst Profhilo results develop over 4 weeks with a second session.

What is the best order to have Botox and skin boosters?

Botox should be administered first because it requires precision targeting of specific muscles. The skin booster is then applied afterwards as a series of small intradermal injections. If you choose numbing cream for comfort, it is applied after the Botox.
